Sometimes it feels like it’s never going to get better. Your good vibes can drastically take a turn in a matter of seconds. All it takes is someone else’s negative behavior or another silly project being dumped on your plate. Although you can’t control these situations or the people causing the situations, you can control how you react to them. Here are a few ways I keep calm at work.
GO FOR A WALK.
Probably my favorite thing to do when I need to keep calm. Step out and take a quick stroll to clear your mind. If you need to shed a few tears or talk to yourself, have at it.
LISTEN TO MUSIC.
Sometimes all it takes is some alone time with music. It will calm you, soothe you, and distract you. Even if you’re not a music junkie, it’s worth a try if it’ll help get you grounded.
TAKE A DEEP BREATH.
It can be easy to forget to breathe during stressful moments. Take a few minutes to close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
DAB ESSENTIAL OIL ON YOUR WRISTS.
Sometimes the right mix of oils can help calm and relax you. I find lavender, rose, lemon, chamomile, and bergamot to really do the trick.
TALK (OR WRITE) IT OUT.
If you decide to talk to the person who’s caused your frustration, please make sure you breathe, stay focused, avoid accusing (so hard!), and really listen. If you can’t seem to articulate your words, try writing them down.
Most importantly, no matter what situation you’re in, we should act out the Golden Rule and treat people the way we would hope to be treated.
